In a recent report, The Daily Mirror offered an update on the future of Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino this summer. It is believed that the Reds are planning to sit down with the Brazilian striker’s representatives to sort out his future in the coming weeks.
Firmino’s Recent Form At Anfield
Firmino had a tough season at Anfield last season when he struggled to secure a regular starting spot in Jurgen Klopp’s first XI. The 30-year-old banged in 11 goals and secured five assists in 35 matches for the Merseyside club in the previous campaign on all fronts.
The 55-time Brazil international saw a lot of his game time come off the bench which could be why he only averaged 1.5 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after making 78.8% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp Cut Firmino Loose This Summer?
Firmino is a technically gifted footballer who can set up a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third. He is proficient at getting himself into some dangerous areas inside the opponent’s penalty area and remains a decent finisher up top.
Firmino has developed great chemistry with Mohamed Salah and could go on to strike another fruitful partnership with him in the upcoming campaign. However, the recent arrival of Darwin Nunez could limit his game time even more in the future.
The Brazil international is still good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at Anfield next season. However, his current contract at Liverpool is set to expire in 2023 which is why Jurgen Klopp should think about tieing him down to a new, short-term contract.
At 30, Firmino might still have a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Hence, the Merseyside club should not think about cutting him loose during this summer transfer period as he is still good enough to help the Reds compete for some major trophies in the coming seasons. However, Firmino has to find a way to overcome his injury concerns if he wants to stay relevant at the highest level.
