In a recent report, Sport offered an update on the future of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay. It is believed that the Barca attacker doesn’t want to join Tottenham Hotspur during this summer transfer period.
Depay’s Good Campaign In Spanish Football
Depay had a promising debut season at the Nou Camp as he put in a series of influential performances for the Catalan outfit in the final third. The Dutch sensation banged in 13 goals and picked up two assists in 37 matches for Xavi’s side in the previous campaign across all fronts.
The 28-year-old proved himself to be a reliable performer in the opposition half after he averaged 2.2 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even tidy when distributing possession in the attacking end of the field based on his pass success rate of 82.1% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Cut Depay Loose This Summer?
Depay can be a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. He can create a yard of space for himself to get a few shots in on target and is proficient at engineering some promising chances for his teammates in the final third.
The Dutchman can even time his runs well in behind the opponent’s backline. However, following the arrival of Raphinha from Leeds United recently, Depay will find it difficult to secure regular playing time if he stays at Barcelona in the upcoming campaign. At 28, he is enjoying his prime at the moment, so it is only logical for the attacker to seek regular first-team chances over the next few years.
The Moordrecht-born talent is currently surplus to requirements at the Nou Camp. Hence, Xavi would be wise to cut him loose before the end of this summer transfer window. It makes a lot of sense for the Catalan club to cash in on him and use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen their squad even further ahead of the new campaign.
