In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Pete O’Rourke stated that Newcastle United are showing interest in Napoli striker Victor Osimhen this summer. O’Rourke said,
“I’m sure he’s been on their radar for most of the summer, it’s just the issue probably is the price tag that’s on his head from Napoli.
“Napoli are demanding big, big money for him, so even with Newcastle’s riches, I don’t think they could get near that transfer fee for him right now. It’s probably £80 million-plus for the Nigerian International.”
Osimhen’s Impressive Form In Italian Football
Osimhen had a fantastic campaign at Naples recently as he banged in a lot of goals in Serie A. The 23-year-old registered 18 goals and earned six assists in 32 appearances for Napoli last season in various competitions.
The Nigerian sensation performed well to average 3.4 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. However, he needs to improve his ball distribution after he made 70.5% of his attempted passes in the Italian top tier (stats via whoscored).
Is Osimhen A Dream Signing For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Osimhen can complete a few dangerous dribbles with the ball in the attacking end of the field. He has proven his worth as a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal and can also engineer some meaningful openings for his teammates in the final third.
A striker of Osimhen’s quality will be a dream signing for Newcastle United this summer. At 23, the Nigeria international will only get better with each year which makes him an attractive option for the Magpies to consider this off-season.
We can expect Osimhen to add plenty of pace and goals to Eddie Howe‘s frontline. He would serve as an upgrade over Chris Wood, who has flattered to deceive during his time at St. James’ Park.
Thus, it makes sense for the Tyneside outfit to make a move to bring Osimhen to England during this summer transfer period. However, Newcastle does not have the lure of UEFA Champions League football to attract the player, so it would be difficult for Howe to get him on board this summer.
