In a recent report, Le 10 Sport claimed that Newcastle United have begun discussions to land Paris Saint-Germain ace Julian Draxler this summer. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the German wing wizard.
Draxler’s Tough Season In French Football
The 28-year-old had a difficult campaign at Parc des Princes as he missed a lot of games due to multiple injuries. Draxler ended last season with two goals and two assists to his name in 24 matches across various competitions.
The Gladbeck-born sensation failed to impress as most of his appearances came off the bench which explains why he only averaged 0.5 shots, 0.5 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in Ligue 1. However, he was excellent when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after completing 91.6% of his attempted passes in the French first division (stats via whoscored).
Is Draxler A Dream Option For Newcastle United?
Draxler is a brilliant dribbler with the ball and has got the eye to play a few decisive passes in the attacking end of the field. He has got the pace to trouble the opposition defenders out on the wide areas. The German talent can even chip in by netting his fair share of goals up top. He hardly throws away possession when linking up play with others around him.
However, frequent injuries derailed his progress at Paris last season. Maybe, joining Newcastle United could be tempting for Draxler as they can pay his high wages as well as offer him regular playing time at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.
There is no denying that a winger of Draxler’s quality would be a dream option for Eddie Howe to consider this summer as he will improve his attacking options considerably this summer.
However, there are some question marks over whether Draxler has what it takes to adapt to the physical nature and high intensity of Premier League football. Still, the pros outweigh the cons of signing him, so the Magpies should go all out to secure his services in this off-season.
