According to recent reports from The Times, Cristiano Ronaldo wants to depart Manchester United in the ongoing transfer window if a suitable offer comes in for his services. The Portugal international is unhappy that Manchester United will be playing in Europa League next season – a competition in which he has never appeared.
The report further states that Ronaldo believes he can deliver at the top level for the next three or four years. As a result, he wants to represent a team capable of winning silverware. However, given Manchester United’s situation, it might take years before they can compete for major trophies again. Despite his love for the club, the 37-year-old is hesitant about being a part of Erik Ten Hag’s rebuild project.
However, the officials at Old Trafford are not keen on letting him leave. “Cristiano is not for sale. We want – and fully expect – him to be with us next season.” – A source told the Mirror.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who signed from Serie A side Juventus last year for a fee in the region of £20 million (£12.9 million fixed plus a further £6.9 million in add-ons), scored twenty-four goals in Manchester United’s worst season in history. The striker was optimistic about his future back in June, insisting he was happy to remain at Old Trafford.
“I was happy, of course, to be back in a club that really raised my career, so it was unbelievable, the feeling when I came back again. It was nice to feel the supporters – the happiness of them was great,” said Ronaldo.
“I was and still am very happy to be here, and what I have to say to the fans is they are amazing. Even when we lost games, they always support us, they always are with us. The supporters are always in my heart and it’s the people that we all should respect because they are always on our side.
“For me, the most important thing is to try to win the games and try to win some championship or some cup but I believe that Manchester will be where they belong. As I say before, sometimes it takes time but I still believe.”
What Should Be Ten Hag’s Play?
Manchester United are depleted of options when it comes to the striker’s department, so they need to fend off the offers that come in for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. He would be free to leave when his contract expires next summer, but given that the 2022/23 season will mark the starting phase of the rebuild, Ten Hag will need his experience, leadership abilities, and above all – his goals, to begin on a good note.
