In a recent report, Correio da Manhã claimed that Liverpool are locked in a three-way battle for Sporting CP midfield ace Matheus Nunes. It is understood that the Reds could face competition in the form of Chelsea and Wolverhampton Wanderers in pursuit of the Portuguese talent this summer.
Nunes’ Impressive Run Of Form At Estádio José Alvalade
Nunes had a decent campaign in Portuguese football recently as he managed to put in a series of influential displays for Sporting at the centre of the park. The 23-year-old registered four goals and five assists in 50 matches for the Portuguese outfit last season on all fronts.
The Brazil-born talent gave a good account of himself at the heart of Sporting’s midfield after he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per game in Liga Portugal. He was even tidy with his ball distribution as he completed 85.8% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Nunes A Good Choice For Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp?
Nunes is a solid tackler of the ball and can scan the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team in midfield. He can even engineer some decent chances for his teammates in the final third and is a great dribbler with the ball as well.
The Portuguese midfield ace can retain possession well in tight spaces and deserves credit for chipping in with his fair share of goals and assists last season.
There is no doubt that Nunes will strengthen Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield department at Anfield. At 23, he will only get better in the coming seasons and could serve as a perfect long-term successor to Jordan Henderson at the Merseyside club.
Nunes has what it takes to help the Reds compete with Manchester City in the Premier League title race and also, challenge for even more trophies over the next decade. Thus, the Portuguese playmaker will be a decent choice for Klopp to consider before the end of this summer transfer window.
