In a recent print edition, Correio da Manha claimed that Liverpool are facing stiff competition for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes. It has been mentioned that the Reds will have to rival Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester City in pursuit of the Portuguese midfield ace, who wants to play UEFA Champions League football next season.
Nunes’ Decent Run Of Form In Portuguese Football
Nunes had an impressive season in Portugal as he managed to perform at a high level for Sporting at the centre of the park. The 23-year-old featured in 50 matches for the Portuguese club in the previous campaign, scoring four goals and earning five assists across various competitions.
The Portuguese playmaker was a positive influence at both ends of the field after he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He was even quite careful when distributing possession from midfield as he completed 85.8% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Liverpool Head Coach Jurgen Klopp Move In For Nunes?
Nunes can do a little bit of everything at the centre of the park. He is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few important interceptions for his team.
The Portuguese talent can strike the ball well from long range and can even engineer a few inviting chances for his teammates in the attacking end of the pitch. Nunes is an exceptional dribbler with the ball at his feet and can be a hard man to stop when he is running at full swing in the opposition half.
We can expect the Sporting CP star to add more energy and dynamism to Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield if the Reds can find a way to win the race for his services this summer.
Liverpool have currently got an aging midfield with both Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson both entering the last stage of their respective playing careers. Therefore, Klopp would be wise to move in for Nunes as he will strengthen his midfield for the long run.
