In a recent interview with Football Insider, Paddy Kenny tipped Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez to be a success. Kenny said,
“It’s pre-season, it’s about getting fit.
“It’s not about how many goals you score or how many you win by. It’s about getting those players fit and ready for the start of the season and minimising injuries.
“It’s always good to score goals, of course it is. It’s confidence. From experience, it’s like goalkeepers getting clean sheets, it is what you are there for.
“I’m sure Nunez will be a hit for Liverpool. I have no doubt about it whatsoever. There is nothing to worry about.
“Four goals against Leipzig isn’t bad, is it? What a brilliant performance from him.”
Nunez’s Impressive Numbers At Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica
Nunez had a fantastic campaign at Benfica recently as he put in a lot of match-winning performances as the focal point of their attack. The 23-year-old banged in 34 goals and earned four assists in 41 matches for the Portuguese club last season on all fronts.
The Artigas-born talent was a reliable performer in the final third after he averaged 3.0 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game in the Liga Portugal. However, the Uruguay international needs to improve his link-up play in the opposition half as he completed 67.1% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Will Nunez Be A Good Signing For Liverpool?
Nunez can make some clever turns in and around the opponent’s penalty box and is proficient at getting a few strikes in at goal. He can even set up a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third and loves to make some well-timed runs in behind the opposition defence.
The Uruguayan sensation proved his worth as a deadly finisher up top in the previous campaign. Furthermore, he went on to score four goals for the Reds in a pre-season friendly match against Red Bull Leipzig this month.
The early signs are quite promising from Nunez. Therefore, Jurgen Klopp has every reason to be optimistic about the gifted striker’s chances of becoming a success story at Anfield in the future. It is quite likely that Nunez could turn out to be a good signing for the Merseyside club as long as he can successfully cope with the physical nature of English football.
