In a recent interview with Football Fancast, journalist Pete O’Rourke urged Aston Villa to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher. O’Rourke said,
“I think we saw what Conor Gallagher provided for Crystal Palace last year. He was probably one of the best players in the Premier League, for me, on his day. So, he will definitely be a huge signing for Villa if Steven Gerrard was able to get him.”
Gallagher’s Impressive Form At Selhurst Park Last Season
Gallagher had a decent loan spell at Crystal Palace where he managed to establish himself as a key member of Patrick Viera’s midfield. The English talent made 39 appearances for the Eagles last season, finding the back of the net on eight occasions and earning five assists in all competitions.
The 22-year-old was a consistent performer at the heart of Palace’s midfield based on his average 2.0 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.7 clearances, 1.5 shots, 1.1 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 81.2% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Is Gallagher A Decent Option For Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard?
Gallagher is a solid tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions for his team at the centre of the park. He is usually full of energy and running in midfield and can set up a few clear-cut chances for his teammates in the attacking end of the field. Gallagher is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also play in the number ten position or as a right-sided wide player if needed.
The English midfield ace can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range and can retain possession relatively well in the opponent’s half.
Someone of Gallagher’s skillset will be an excellent addition to Steven Gerrard‘s match-day squad this summer. He will inject more goals and creativity into Aston Villa‘s midfield.
Plus, the English sensation could even help the Villans secure a top-half finish in the Premier League next season. Thus, Gallagher will be a good option for the West Midlands club to consider this summer.
