In a recent print edition, A Bola stated that Chelsea are planning to move in for Sporting CP midfielder Matheus Nunes this summer. It has been claimed that the Blues are about to table a bid worth €45m + €5m in bonuses to sign the Portuguese midfield ace in this off-season.
Nunes’ Decent Run Of Form At The José Alvalade Stadium
Nunes was a prominent feature at the heart of Sporting’s midfield and managed to catch the eye with his performances in Portuguese football in the previous campaign. The 23-year-old was involved in 48 matches for the Portuguese club last season, scoring four times and providing five assists on all fronts.
The Portuguese sensation anchored the midfield quite well for Sporting as he averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 2.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after he completed 85.8% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Nunes A Good Option For Chelsea Boss Thomas Tuchel?
Nunes is a solid tackler of the ball and can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back. He has got the eye to play a decisive pass in the opponent’s half and can even make a few clever runs with the ball from midfield. The Brazil-born talent usually plays as an anchorman at the centre of the park and can even fill in as an attacking midfielder if needed.
A player of Nunes’ skillset will be a welcome addition to Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel‘s squad as he will strengthen his midfield options ahead of the new campaign.
At 23, Nunes will only improve his overall game with each season which makes him a decent option for the Blues to pursue in this off-season. The Portuguese talent could even help the West London outfit close the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of Premier League football. Therefore, Tuchel should focus on getting a deal done for Nunes before the end of this summer transfer window.
