In a recent print edition, Corriere dello Sport revealed that Chelsea have held concrete talks to land Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt. It is understood that the Blues are serious about acquiring the services of the Dutch centre-back this summer.
De Ligt’s Good Run Of Form In Italy Last Season
De Ligt had a decent campaign at the Allianz Stadium recently as he managed to put in a run of solid performances at the centre of Juve’s backline. The 22-year-old featured in 42 matches for the Turin giants last season, scoring three times and securing one assist across all competitions.
The Dutch sensation kept things solid at the back by averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per game in Serie A. He even took care of the ball well when distributing possession from the back, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 88.9% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
Is De Ligt A Good Option For Chelsea Head Coach Thomas Tuchel?
De Ligt is a good tackler of the ball and doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the offensive. He usually times his challenges well to earn possession back for his side on the defensive end of the field.
Standing at 1.89m, the Dutch central defender is a dominant presence at the back and can play his way out from the defence when needed.
A defender of de Ligt’s quality will no doubt be a great signing for Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel as he will enhance the quality of his first team considerably ahead of the new campaign. The 38-time Netherlands international has got enough experience by now to succeed in the Premier League.
At 22, de Ligt’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a decent option for the Blues to consider this summer. He could even help the West London club challenge for some major trophies in the coming seasons. Therefore, Tuchel should try everything in his power to bring de Ligt to Stamford Bridge before the end of this transfer window.
