In a recent report, Sport claimed that Barcelona forward Memphis Depay is on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur this summer. It has been revealed that the Catalan outfit are looking to receive at least €20m for the Dutch attacker during this summer transfer window.
Depay’s Recent Form In Spanish Football
Depay had a decent campaign at Catalonia recently as he managed to produce a string of productive displays for Barca in the final third. The 28-year-old scored 13 times and secured two assists in 37 matches for the Catalan club last season across all fronts.
The Dutch striker gave a good account of himself in the opponent’s half after he averaged 2.2 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He even took care of the ball well when distributing it in the attacking end of the field as he made 82.1% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Let Depay Go This Summer?
Depay excels at creating a yard of space for himself to get a few shots in on-target. He can be a good finisher in front of the opposition’s goal and has got the vision to play a few decisive passes in the final third. Depay has mainly operated as a centre-forward over the past 11 months but can even fill in as a wide player on either flank if required.
The 80-time Netherlands international can use his pace to make some intelligent runs in behind the opponent’s backline. Still, Barca is better off signing a more prolific forward if they want to compete for some major trophies in the coming seasons.
At 28, Depay is currently playing at his prime, so it is only fair to him if Xavi lets him go during this summer transfer period. There is a real chance that the Dutch attacker won’t be guaranteed regular playing opportunities if he decides to remain at the Nou Camp next season. The Catalan giants should rather use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of their match-day squad.
