In a recent report, Gianluca Di Marzio on Wett Freunde claimed that Barcelona are eyeing a move for Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly next summer. It has been revealed that the Catalan giants have decided to delay making a move for the Senegal international until 2023.
Koulibaly’s Impressive Form In Italian Football Last Season
Koulibaly had another solid campaign with the Naples outfit recently as he managed to perform at a high level for them on the defensive end of the pitch. The Senegalese talent participated in 34 matches for the Italian club last season, finding the back of the net three times while securing three assists in all competitions.
The 31-year-old was a consistent performer when defending inside his half based on his average of 1.4 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 3.1 clearances per 90 minutes in Serie A. He even took care of the ball well when playing his way out from the back, as evidenced by his pass success rate of 86.9% in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
Barcelona Eyeing A Move For Koulibaly In 2023: Good Decision By Xavi?
Koulibaly can use his towering 1.87m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air but is even proficient at playing his way out from the defence. He is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his side.
The France-born talent usually clears the danger when the opposition are looking to threaten his goal and is a reliable performer at the back. Hence, Barca would be wise to move in for Koulibaly when he becomes a free agent at the end of next season.
At 31, the Senegalese powerhouse might still have a few good years left in him and would be a good short-term acquisition for the Catalan outfit next summer. He will enhance the quality of Xavi’s defence at the Nou Camp and could help Barcelona compete for major trophies in the future. Thus, Barca’s decision to delay a move for Koulibaly until 2023 seems to be a good decision financially as the defender will be available on a free transfer.
