If a report from Spanish outlet Sport is believed to be true, Barcelona are willing to listen to offers for Memphis Depay amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur. However, they are not alone in the hunt as the likes of Juventus, AS Roma and Ajax are also keeping close tabs on the Dutchman’s situation at the Catalan club.
The 28-year-old winger joined Barca on a Bosman last summer upon his contract expiration at Lyon. It’s been a decent run so far despite the difficulties of the 2021-22 season, but the La Liga runners-up have made him surplus to requirements following the arrival of Raphinha and renewal of Ousmane Dembele.
Winter signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been a revelation high up the pitch, also they have struck a deal with Bayern Munich for Robert Lewandowski. As things stand, the revamped attacking third has no place for the Netherlands international irrespective of his flexibility across the frontline.
Depay progressed through the youth ranks of Mboordrecht, Sparta Rotterdam and PSV Eindhoven before breaking into the latter’s senior side in 2011. He became their star performer within years and eventually completed a £25m transfer to Manchester United under Louis van Gaal. Although it did not work out for him at the Theatre of Dreams, the versatile attacking ace revived his form soon after securing a winter move to Lyon back in 2017.
With 13 goals and 2 assists in 37 appearances, Depay left his mark in his maiden La Liga campaign. But he is not in Xavi’s plans with teenage sensation Ansu Fati as well as ex-Man City star Ferran Torres ahead of him in the pecking order along with the aforementioned names.
Why Tottenham Hotspur Should Work On A Deal
Having said that, Blaugrana have set a valuation of €20m for the forward. He has entered the final year of his Camp Nou contract and the asking fee, therefore, is way more than the player’s market value under current circumstances. Spurs were leading the race but might back out if the demands are not lowered by his current employers.
Tottenham are desperate to turn it around under Antonio Conte after a dramatic Champions League qualification late in the previous term. Ivan Perišić and Richarlison, the high-profile summer recruits, would add more firepower upfront alongside Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son. Nevertheless, the Lilywhites should opt for Depay, given his all-round ability and past experience of the English game.
