In a recent interview with talkSPORT, Gabriel Agbonlahor urged his former club Aston Villa to sell Anwar El Ghazi this summer. Agbonlahor said,
“I do like El Ghazi.
“But I would sell. I feel where Aston Villa are trying to get to at the moment, the formation Steven Gerrard likes to play, it doesn’t really suit El Ghazi.
“He doesn’t really play wingers. He plays inside eight’s, so I would say sell.”
El Ghazi’s Poor Loan Spell At Goodison Park
El Ghazi had a lackluster six-month loan spell at Everton last season but failed to prove his worth for them in the final third. The 27-year-old participated in two matches for the Toffees in the previous campaign but failed to find the back of the net.
The Barendrecht-born talent has struggled to earn regular game time over the past 12 months. Thus, it makes sense for the Dutch wide player to opt for a change of scenery this summer in search of greener pastures.
Should Aston Villa Head Coach Steven Gerrard Let El Ghazi Go This Summer?
El Ghazi is a decent dribbler with the ball and can strike the ball well from long range. The two-time Netherlands international mainly operates as a right-sided wide player but can even operate on the left-wing if needed. However, things have not worked out for him at Villa Park under Steven Gerrard‘s reign so far. He even failed to catch the eye during his short-term loan spell with the Toffees last season.
At the moment, El Ghazi is surplus to requirements at Aston Villa and is not guaranteed a regular starting spot in Premier League football. At 27, he is entering his prime soon. Hence, it is only fair to the player if the Villans allow him to leave during this summer transfer period.
El Ghazi has still got a year left to run in his current contract with the West Midlands club. Therefore, Gerrard would be wise to let him go for a cut-price fee this summer and use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of his match-day squad.
