In a recent report, The Daily Mirror claimed that Aston Villa have been offered a chance to re-sign Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley. It has been stated that the Villans along with Everton have been given an opportunity to land the English playmaker in this off-season.
Barkley’s Bit-Part Role At Stamford Bridge Last Season
Barkley was a sporadic feature in Thomas Tuchel’s squad last season as he struggled to earn regular playing opportunities in the Premier League. The Liverpool-born sensation was involved in just 14 matches for the Blues in the previous campaign, scoring one goal in the process across all competitions.
The 28-year-old gave a good account of himself off the bench after he averaged 1.5 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.2 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. He even took care of the ball relatively well as he made 85.1% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Will Barkley Be A Good Signing For Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard?
Barkley is a decent playmaker in the opposition half and can make a few clever runs with the ball in the final third. He can even strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range. Barkley usually operates as a box-to-box midfielder but can even fill in as an attacking midfielder if his manager needs him to do so.
At 28, the English midfield ace needs a change of scenery if he wants to make the most out of the remainder of his playing career. Therefore, Aston Villa could be an ideal destination for him as he will get a shot at earning regular playing opportunities in Steven Gerrard‘s first XI. Plus, the Chelsea outcast could go on to form a solid midfield partnership with John McGinn in the future.
We can expect Barkley to add more creativlity and goals to the Villans‘ midfield. He could even help the West Midlands club push for a top-half finish in the Premier League next season. With all things considered, Barkley could be a good signing for Aston Villa this summer as he has what it takes to become a real fan-favourite once again at Villa Park over the next few years.
