In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Dean Jones claimed that Aston Villa are among clubs hoping to sign Anderlecht full-back Sergio Gomez. Jones said,
“Sergio Gomez was a player that actually had a lot of clubs looking at him at the backend of last season coming into the summer window. So, Villa are one of those.
“I don’t know how much progress has been made to this point, but he’s definitely one to keep an eye on.”
Gomez’s Impressive Numbers In Belgian Football
Gomez enjoyed a decent run of form at Anderlecht as he produced a lot of productive displays on the left side of their defence. The 21-year-old found the back of the net on five occasions and secured 12 assists in 34 matches for the Belgian side in league football.
The Badalona-born sensation performed well in both halves after he averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.3 shots, 1.7 key passes, 1.5 crosses and 0.7 dribbles per game in Jupiler Pro League. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from the left flank, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 83% in the Belgian top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Is Gomez A Decent Option For Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard?
Gomez can time his tackles well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually clears the danger when needed and can shoot the ball with power from long range.
The Spanish full-back can engineer a few clear-cut chances for his teammates in the opposition half and can even make some driving runs with the ball down the left flank.
At 21, Gomez has got a bright future ahead of him, so the Villans will do well to lure him to Villa Park in this off-season. He will enhance the quality of Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard‘s match-day squad and offer some healthy competition for Lucas Digne in the race to secure a regular starting spot at the West Midlands club.
With all things considered, Gomez will be a great option for the Villans to pursue during this summer transfer period as he is good enough to help them secure a top-half finish in the Premier League next season.
