In a recent report, The Sun claimed that West Ham United are close to recruiting Stade Rennais defender Nayef Aguerd after failing to sign him last summer. It is believed that the Hammers are eyeing a move to land the Morocco sensation in this off-season.
Aguerd’s Decent Form In French Football This Season
The 26-year-old managed to catch the eye at times during the 2021-22 campaign as he was responsible for putting in some solid displays at the heart of Rennais’ defence. Aguerd has been involved in 40 matches for the French club this season, netting four goals and securing three assists in multiple competitions.
The 19-time Morocco international has been a dominant presence at the back based on his average of 0.9 tackles, 0.8 interceptions and 4.0 clearances per 90 minutes in Ligue 1.
He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 89% of his attempted passes in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
What Will Aguerd Bring To West Ham United?
Aguerd is a good tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his side on the defensive third of the field. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required and excels at passing his way out from the back. The Ligue 1 centre-half has even contributed by scoring and creating his fair share of goals for Rennes this season.
The Morocco talent is primarily a centre-back but can also fill in as a left-back if required. Hence, he will be a good fit for David Moyes‘ style of play at the London Stadium.
At 26, Aguerd’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a decent option for West Ham to consider during this summer transfer window.
We can expect the Rennes defensive ace to bring more bite and steel to the Hammers‘ defence and increase competition for places within David Moyes’ match-day squad. Therefore, the East London outfit should think about moving in for the Morocco international during this summer transfer window.
