In a recent report, Sport offered an update on the future of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay. It is understood that the Catalan club are hoping to renew the Dutch striker’s contract until the summer of 2025 if they don’t receive a suitable offer for him this summer.
Depay’s Good Run Of Form In Spanish Football
Depay has a decent campaign at the Nou Camp as he managed to put in a series of influential displays for Barca in the final third. The 28-year-old banged in 13 goals and secured two assists in 38 matches for the Catalan club last season in all competitions.
The 79-time Netherlands international gave a good account of himself in the opposition half based on his average of 2.2 shots, 1.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even tidy with his ball distribution after making 82.1% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Keep Hold Of Depay Beyond This Summer?
Depay excels at engineering space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. The Dutchman can be a decent finisher in front of the opponent’s goal when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. Depay is primarily a centre-forward but can even operate as a left-sided wide player if required.
The Netherlands international can even orchestrate a few inviting chances for his teammates in the final third. He is usually accurate with his link-up play but needs to improve his productivity up top. Therefore, Barca should think about retaining his services beyond this summer as he could still be a key asset for them in the future.
At the very least, the Dutch talent is good enough to serve as a decent rotational piece in Xavi‘s squad. Furthermore, he could help the Catalan club challenge for some major silverware over the next few years.
At 28, Depay is currently enjoying the prime years of his playing career, so Xavi should think about keeping him at the Nou Camp next season.
