In a recent report, Sport offered an update on Liverpool and their pursuit of Real Madrid talent Marco Asensio. It is believed that the Spanish playmaker is not keen on sealing a move to the Merseyside club this summer.
Asensio’s Inconsistent Campaign In Spain
Asensio had an up and down season in the Spanish capital as he struggled to find consistency in front of the opposition goal. The 26-year-old found the back of the net 12 times and earned a couple of assists in 42 matches for the Spanish club in the previous campaign across all fronts.
The Spain international deserves some plaudits for averaging 2.1 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per game in La Liga football. He was even accurate when interchanging possession in the attacking end of the field based on his pass completion rate of 87.7% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Asensio Not Keen On A Move To Liverpool: Big Blow For Jurgen Klopp?
Asensio can set up a few excellent chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half and can strike the ball with accuracy and power from long range. He is a good dribbler with the ball at his feet and doesn’t give away the ball cheaply in the final third.
The Spaniard has done well to contribute by scoring his fair share of goals last season but needs to be more consistent with his offensive numbers in the future. Asensio can operate in multiple positions across the frontline. He is primarily a right-winger but can even fill in as a left-sided wide player or play in the number ten position if required.
Liverpool have not got the luxury to offer Asensio regular playing time at Anfield in the coming seasons. Thus, it is no surprise that the player is not too keen on making a switch to the Merseyside club this summer.
Missing out on Asensio this summer will be a slight blow for Jurgen Klopp as he would have been an ideal rotational piece in his match-day squad. The Reds would now have no choice but to switch their attention to some of their other attacking targets for this summer transfer window.
