In a recent interview with Football Insider, Frank McAvennie urged Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn to stay put this summer. McAvennie said,
“It would be a big blow if he left.
“Is he going to go? A player starts playing well and you see them linked with every club.
“I haven’t seen too much about it myself. John is happy, from what I can gather.
“He is playing in the Premier League, he is playing every week and he’s doing very well.
“There aren’t many people who have gone down to England and done that. He has done brilliantly.
“He’s shining week in and week out even though Grealish isn’t there anymore, they were great together.”
McGinn’s Decent Form In English Football Last Season
McGinn had another solid campaign at Villa Park after he managed to put in a run of influential displays at the heart of Steven Gerrard’s midfield. The 27-year-old scored three goals and grabbed four assists in 36 matches for the Villans last season across all competitions.
The Scottish sensation managed to make an impact in both halves as he averaged 3.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 1.2 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He even distributed the ball relatively well based on his pass completion rate of 79.5% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
What Should Be Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard’s Play With Regards To McGinn’s Future?
McGinn can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life tough for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can sense the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his side in midfield and doesn’t mind clearing his lines when needed.
The 48-time Scotland international can orchestrate a few decent chances for others around him and is proficient at making some clever runs with the ball towards the opposition penalty box. He can even score some important goals for his team in the final third.
McGinn is currently one of the first names in Steven Gerrard‘s teamsheet. Thus, it makes no sense for Aston Villa to cash in on him this summer. The Scottish talent’s contract at Villa Park is set to run out in 2025, so there is no immediate need for the Villans to let him go this summer.
