In a recent report from Sports Illustrated, it is stated that Liverpool have made a massive £85M bid for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in an attempt to secure his signature amid heavy competition from Arsenal.
It has also been mentioned that the Reds have identified him as a replacement for Sadio Mane if the Senegalese sensation decides to exit Anfield this summer. Nunez has reportedly told the Primeira Liga side that he intends to play at Anfield next season.
Nunez’s Impressive Campaign In Portuguese Football
Nunez has enjoyed a solid campaign at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica as he has produced a handful of impressive displays being at the heart of Benfica’s attack. He has scored 34 goals and created four assists over 41 appearances for the Portuguese outfit this season across all fronts.
The Artigas-born talent has led the attack for the Portuguese outfit exceptionally well based on his average of 3.0 shots, 1.1 key passes, 0.5 crosses and 1.4 dribbles per game in Primeira Liga. However, he could certainly improve his link-up play as noticed by his pass success rate of 67.1% in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via whoscored).
Should Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp Go All In To Sign Him?
Nunez can make a few decent runs with the ball in the final third. He excels at finishing from inside the penalty box and can confidently convert the chances created in front of the goal. The 22-year-old can even chip in for a few assists by setting up his teammates with some clear-cut goal scoring chances. He has improved himself to be one of the most deadly strikers in Europe.
The Uruguay international has consistently performed in the attacking third which is evident by his impressive numbers in Portuguese football. The youngster is good enough to serve as an ideal replacement for Sadio Mane whose future remains uncertain at Anfield with his current contract set to expire next summer.
Jurgen Klopp could be the best possible manager to unlock his full potential while playing in the English top flight. Nunez would have to work a lot upon his passing, given Liverpool’s playstyle, although he has a lot of room for improvement. Other than this, he remains a good fit for the Reds, and they should do well to bring him over to Anfield with the Uruguayan sensation also willing to play for them ahead of the next season.
