Recent reports from the Daily Express state that Liverpool are keen on signing Bayern Munich winger Serge Gnabry in the summer transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looks set to add to his options in attack.
The report further states that Liverpool have already established initial contact with the player’s camp, but they find it difficult to agree to Gnabry’s personal terms. While the German forward has set his demands for a weekly wage of around £250,000, the Merseyside club are reluctant to offer more than £200,000 per week. The Reds aren’t entirely new to this situation, with Mohamed Salah’s future up in the air for the exact reasons.
Heading into the last year of his contract, Bayern are keen on offloading the 26-year-old winger for a fee in the region of £34 million to avoid losing him on a free transfer next summer.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Real Madrid are also in the race to secure his services.
Having come through the ranks at Stuttgart and Arsenal, Serge Gnabry signed for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich from Werder Bremen in the summer of 2017 for a fee in the region of €8 million. Over the course of the past six years, the German international has made 171 appearances for the Bavarians, scoring 64 goals and bagging 40 assists across all competitions. The 26-year-old had an extraordinary 2021/22 season with Bayern as he played a crucial part in their tenth successive title win by netting 20 goal contributions in 34 Bundesliga appearances.
He managed to put up some awe-inspiring numbers on the board the last term – averaging 1.4 tackles, two shots, 1.4 key passes, 1.9 dribbles and 0.5 crosses per 90 minutes in the German top-flight. Furthermore, with an average WhoScored rating of 7.30, he established himself as one of the best players on his side last term. Capable of playing down either wing and even as a centre-forward in the hour of need, versatility is one of his prime strengths.
The Perfect Option For Jurgen Klopp?
With Sadio Mane expected to go the other way in the not-so-far future, a potential player-plus-cash deal could break the ice for Liverpool. The Stuttgart-born attacker has rarely had a bad season since moving to Munich, and one would only expect him to find more success in Jurgen Klopp’s system that prioritises wingers as the main goal-scorers. Besides, with the uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah’s future at Anfield, the signing seems even more sensible.
The Diaz-Jota-Gnabry front-three can lead Liverpool’s attack for years to come. Hence, Klopp should go all in for him in the summer.
