In a recent print edition, AS claimed that Liverpool have identified Real Madrid playmaker Marco Asensio as a target for the summer transfer window. It has been mentioned that the Reds could face competition in the form of Arsenal, Manchester United, AC Milan and Juventus in pursuit of the Spain international.
Asensio’s Up And Down Season In Spanish Football
Asensio had a campaign of mixed emotions at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium as he won a few trophies with Los Blancos but struggled to play a prominent role for them over the past ten months. The Spanish sensation deserves some credit for scoring 12 times and securing two assists in 42 appearances for the Madrid outfit last season on all fronts.
The 26-year-old performed well to average 2.1 shots, 1.0 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He was even excellent when distributing the ball in the final third after he completed 87.7% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Asensio A Good Choice For Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp?
Asensio is a decent playmaker in the final third as he can create a few encouraging chances for his teammates up top. He can strike the ball well from long range and can chip in by scoring a handful of important goals for his team. Asensio is primarily a right-winger but can even fill in as a left-sided wide player or operate as an attacking midfielder if required.
Thus, Jurgen Klopp would be wise to move in for the 29-time Spain international before the end of this summer transfer window as he will bring some goals and creativity to his attack.
Asensio is good enough to serve as a good back-up to Mohamed Salah for the right-wing position in Liverpool‘s first XI. He has got a wealth of experience at the highest level and would be a good choice for Klopp’s brand of football at the Merseyside club. However, only time will tell whether Asensio can make a smooth transition to life in English football if the Reds manage to get him on board this summer.
