Recent reports from the Liverpool Echo state that Liverpool are keen on signing Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay in the ongoing transfer window as Jurgen Klopp looks set to add to his defensive options ahead of the 2022/23 season.
The highly-rated youngster has been identified as the perfect understudy to first-choice right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold as the Reds are nearing an agreement with the Scottish club. Both sides are in serious negotiations regarding the structure of a deal for the 18-year-old defender. Liverpool would reportedly pay a fee in the region of £4 million up front, with talks being held to finalise the add-ons (which could take the deal to a total of £6 million).
The fee mentioned above will set a new record for the highest sum ever received for a player by the Scottish club. As Ramsay himself is keen on working under Klopp’s wings, it’s only a matter of time before the transfer is sealed.
Leicester City, Manchester United, Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Leeds United are among the Premier League clubs to have shown interest in the Scottish international.
Having come through the ranks at Aberdeen, Calvin Ramsay made his senior debut in March 2021. With a total of ten-goal contributions last season, the youngster has attracted interest from numerous clubs across Europe due to his offensive style of play.
The 3-times Under-21 Scotland international managed to put up some decent numbers on the board the past term – averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 0.6 shots, 1.9 key passes, 1.4 long balls and 1.8 crosses per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership (calculated over 22 appearances). Needless to say, the 18-year-old would excel in Klopp’s system that prioritises attacking wing-backs as the prime creators of the team.
Where Does He Fit In Klopp’s Plans?
21-year-old Neco Williams, who spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Fulham, is expected to leave Liverpool on a permanent transfer this summer. The Welshman’s departure would free the slot for a backup fullback, so playing second fiddle to Trent Alexander-Arnold is Ramsay’s role as of now. Knocking the England international off the perch would take something special, so the teenager might have to settle for limited game time in the early cup fixtures.
