In a recent interview (via Fabrizio Romano), Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez has offered an update on his future amid recent interest from Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur. Martinez said, “My plan is clear: I really want to stay at Inter next season.
“I’ve not received communications from the club as of today, I want to continue at Inter next season”.
Martinez’s Impressive Numbers In Italian Football This Season
The 24-year-old has enjoyed a terrific campaign at San Siro as he put in a lot of influential performances as the focal point of Inter’s attack. Martinez has banged in 25 goals and grabbed four assists in 49 matches for the Italian outfit this season across various competitions.
The 38-time Argentina international has performed well to average 3.4 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Serie A. However, he has to find a way to improve his ball distribution after completing 74.7% of his attempted passes in the Italian first division (stats via whoscored).
What Should Be Chelsea Boss Thomas Tuchel’s Play With Regards To Martinez?
Martinez has transformed himself into a deadly finisher in the final third during the recently concluded Serie A campaign. He excels at creating a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target.
The Argentine marksman can even engineer some meaningful openings for his teammates in the attacking end of the field. However, only time will tell whether he would be able to cope with the physical nature of English football if Chelsea can find a way to get him on board this summer.
However, a move to Stamford Bridge seems unlikely after Martinez recently expressed his desire to stay with Inter Milan publicly. The South American striker would have added a lot of goals and creativity to Chelsea’s attack and could have served as a perfect strike partner for Romelu Lukaku at the West London club over the next few years.
The Blues head coach Thomas Tuchel would have no choice now but to turn his attention to some of his other transfer targets if he wants to strengthen his attack ahead of the new season.
