In a recent print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport stated that Chelsea have identified Inter Milan forward Lautaro Martinez as a target. It has been claimed that the Blues are willing to send Romelu Lukaku in the other direction to bring the Argentine striker to West London this summer.
Martinez’s Excellent Form In Italian Football
Martinez enjoyed another excellent season in Milan as he managed to produce several match-winning displays as the focal point of Inter’s attack. The Argentine frontman has registered 25 goals and four assists in 49 matches for the Italian outfit during this campaign in all competitions.
The 24-year-old has led the line well for Inter and managed to prove his worth as a valuable contributor by averaging 3.4 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in Serie A. However, he was a bit careless with his ball distribution after completing 74.7% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Martinez Bring To Chelsea?
Martinez excels at generating a yard of space for himself to get some powerful shots in on-target. He has proven himself to be a brilliant finisher in the final third and has also got the vision to create some meaningful openings for his teammates in the opponent’s half.
The Argentina international is about to enter his prime, so Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel can expect to get the best out of him if he successfully manages to get him on board this summer.
Martinez would be a terrific acquisition for the Blues as long as he can make a smooth transition to life in the Premier League. We can expect the South American marksman to bring a lot of goals to the West London club‘s frontline. He could even help Chelsea compete for more trophies in the coming seasons.
The talented forward will serve as a decent replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who has endured his fair share of problems at Stamford Bridge both on and off the field. Thus, Tuchel would be wise to try everything in his power to sign Martinez, even if he has to send Lukaku to San Siro in the process.
