In a recent report, The Athletic revealed that Chelsea are hoping to land Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele on a free transfer. It is understood that the Blues are working on a deal to bring the French winger to Stamford Bridge when he becomes a free agent at the end of this month.
Dembele’s Good Run Of Form In Spanish Football Last Season
Dembele had a decent campaign at the Nou Camp as he performed at a high level for Barca out on the wide areas. The 25-year-old found the back of the net twice but managed to pick up 13 assists in 32 matches for the Catalan outfit this season across all fronts.
The France international was a reliable performer in Xavi’s frontline based on his average of 2.2 shots, 2.1 key passes and 2.8 dribbles per game in La Liga. He even took care of the ball well when distributing possession in the opposition half, based on his pass success rate of 84.4% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Dembele A Decent Choice For Chelsea?
Dembele can use his quickness and agility to get in behind the opposition backline and can set up a few clear-cut chances for his teammates in the attacking end of the field. However, the goals have dried up for the Frenchman recently, so he needs to be more decisive in front of the opposition goal.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of recruiting Dembele as he will add a lot of pace and creativity to Thomas Tuchel’s attack at Stamford Bridge. Hence, the Blues would be wise to pounce on the Frenchman when his contract with Barca expires at the end of this month.
Dembele has got the experience and winning mindset to help the West London outfit challenge Manchester City and Liverpool in the Premier League title race next season. At 25, the Barcelona speedster’s best years are ahead of him as long as he can overcome his past injury problems.
Dembele will be a great choice for Chelsea to pursue this summer as he will be available on a free transfer but could still aid Tuchel’s side to compete for a few more trophies over the next few years.
