In a recent report, football.london stated that Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is keen on moving away this summer. It has also been mentioned that the Blues are in search of a replacement for the £97.5m forward who just arrived last summer.
Lukaku’s Campaign For Chelsea This Season
Lukaku has failed to establish himself as a regular feature under Thomas Tuchel with only 26 appearances in the Premier League. Despite that, he has scored 13 goals over 41 appearances across all competitions.
The Belgium international remains a good finisher, although he has only produced a few impressive displays. He is still regarded as a decent performer after averaging 1.9 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he has only managed to complete 72.9% of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Chelsea Boss Thomas Tuchel Cut Him Loose This Summer?
Romelu Lukaku remains a goal threat for the opposition despite the poor run of form. He can confidently convert the chances created by his teammates and doesn’t mind taking a shot at goal from outside the penalty box. His attack positioning allows him to create some clear-cut goal-scoring chances.
However, the Belgian’s link-up play needs significant improvement if he wishes to maintain his standard and play at a high level. He is also poor at holding the ball and distributing possession which is key for any striker to reach greater heights.
At 29, he is currently in his prime and if he recovers from his slump then we could see him developing into a deadly striker.
As for the Blues, an investment of £97.5m has not paid off well, and Lukaku has been criticised as a massive failure who could not live up to expectations. Chelsea will be looking to recoup most of the money and the player should be sold off for a decent value considering his run of form. Thus, putting him up for a loan would be a viable option for Thomas Tuchel although they will most likely end up paying a huge sum of his wages.
