In a recent report, Birmingham Mail revealed that Aston Villa are set to focus their attention on Rangers defender Calvin Bassey. It has been mentioned that the Villans are eyeing a new left-back following the permanent departure of Matt Targett and has identified the Nigerian talent as an option for this summer transfer window.
Bassey’s Decent Form In Scottish Football Last Season
Bassey had a solid campaign at the Ibrox Stadium as he managed to perform at a high level on the left side of Rangers’ defence. The 22-year-old took part in 50 matches for the Scottish club last season, picking up six assists in the process across various competitions.
The three-time Nigeria international has performed well to average 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions, 1.2 clearances and 0.8 key passes per game in the Scottish Premiership. The former Leicester City sensation has even been tidy with his ball distribution after making 86.3% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Bassey Add To Aston Villa Head Coach Steven Gerrard’s Team?
Bassey is a solid tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive third of the field. He usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can set up a few inviting chances for his teammates in the attacking end of the pitch.
At 22, Bassey has still got a lot of room for improvement but has already shown some glimpses of what he is capable of at the Ibrox. Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard could be the ideal man to oversee his development and get the best out of him over the next few years.
Bassey would serve as a good replacement for Matt Targett who joined Newcastle United permanently recently. He would also offer some healthy competition for Lucas Digne at Villa Park in the coming seasons.
We can expect Bassey to add some much-needed depth to the Villans’ backline. He might even help them challenge for a major trophy in the not-too-distant future.
