In a recent report, CronicleLive stated that Newcastle United could make a bid for Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings this summer. It has also been mentioned that the Magpies could successfully lure in the English defender following the Villans’ signing of the Sevilla star which could impact Mings’ game time at Villapark.
Mings’ Campaign At Villa Park This Season
Tyrone Mings has enjoyed a decent campaign at Aston Villa producing impressive displays at the heart of their backline. The 29-year-old has made 37 appearances for the Villans this season scoring one goal and creating 3 assists across all fronts.
The veteran defender has been a dominant figure at the defensive end of the field based on his average of 0.6 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 4.2 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has been decent when distributing the ball from the back, making 81.6% of his attempted passes in English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Bring The Defender To St. James Park?
Mings, with his 1.96m tall frame, can often beat the opposition in aerial duels. He has the ability to time his tackles and looks to maintain composure while going into tackles. On top of this he can even distribute the ball accurately from the backline.
The left-footed defender still has quite a few years left in him, in which he can immediately create an impact in the Newcastle outfit considering he has enough experience in the Premier League. Thus, he would be a terrific signing for Newcastle this summer.
The centre-back will admittedly add more depth to the Magpies boss Eddie Howe’s squad. With the club setting their sight on a title run next season and looking for a place in the European competition, a player of his calibre would certainly strengthen the backline. Howe should be wise to bring him on board as the summer transfer window commences.
