In a recent report from The Sun, it was revealed that Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen has reportedly signed a five-year contract with Barcelona. The report also states that he could be seen at Camp Nou alongside Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta, as the Spanish giants continue to raid the Blues.
The defender’s contract with the Blues expires at the end of this season, and like Antonio Rudiger, he also wishes to exit the club on a free transfer.
Although, Barcelona won’t have to pay anything for the Denmark international, regardless of that, according to AS the deal is worth £21million across five years.
Christensen’s Campaign With Chelsea In Numbers
Andreas Christensen has had a decent campaign at Stamford Bridge as he has managed to produce a few prominent displays at the centre of Chelsea’s backline. The Danish centre-back has been involved in 18 games for the Blues this season.
The Denmark-born talent has performed well to average 0.8 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even been excellent when interchanging possession from the back, evident by his pass success rate of 89.2 in the English top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
He has gone forth to establish himself as a key player in the squad often partnering with Antonio Rudiger or Thiago Silva, as seen in the recent games.
How Does Christensen’s Exit Affect Chelsea?
Andreas Christensen can time his tackles rather than aggressively diving into them. His technical ability boasts accurate short passes from the backline. The 1.87 m tall defender has a great impact in aerial duels as well, winning 2.7 out of 4.8 aerial duels on an average (per 90 min) in the Premier League.
The defender could have gone forth to help the Blues in achieving their objective of winning another Champions League trophy in the next season as with four fixtures left in the league they look confident about finishing in the top four.
Christensen’s exit would leave a hole in Chelsea’s backline which would be a difficult task for Thomas Tuchel to overcome in the upcoming transfer window. At 25, the Danish centre-half’s best years are still ahead of him, so Tuchel would have been wise to retain his services at Stamford Bridge for the long run.
Since the sale is imminent and an ownership change is certain, the situation has profoundly impacted contract talks with several key players. Andreas Christensen’s exit would be a major setback for the former European Champions.
