In a recent report from The Sun, it was revealed that Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso is being targeted by Barcelona. The report also states that he could be seen in Camp Nou alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen, who has already signed a five-year contract with the Spanish giants as they continue to raid the Blues.
Speaking to Spanish outlet Okdiario, the Spaniard admitted that he would be delighted to return to Spain although currently he is devoted to Tuchel’s side.
“Barcelona? I have a contract and at the moment I’m still at Chelsea,” he said. “I am happy, although I would always be delighted to return to Spain. That’s what I can say today.”
Alonso’s Campaign With Chelsea In Numbers
Alonso has had a decent campaign at Stamford Bridge as he has managed to produce a few dominant displays at the left-back of Chelsea’s defence. The Spanish defender has been involved in 25 games for the Blues, scoring 4 goals and creating 5 assists in the Premier League this season.
The Spain-born talent has performed impressively to average 1.6 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game in the Premier League. Alonso has a passing accuracy of 81 per cent over 40.9 average passes and 1.6 key passes per game. (stats via whoscored).
He has established himself in the squad as a prominent player often partnering with Reece James or Cesar Azpilicueta, as seen in the recent games.
Should Thomas Tuchel Sanction Alonso’s exit?
Marcos Alonso is a versatile player who can play both in the left-mid and the left-back position. The defender can time his tackles and does not shy away from going for the ball in the backline. He is comfortable in both creating opportunities and finding the back of the net.
Although he has been given enough first-team opportunities this season, that won’t likely be the case upon Ben Chilwell’s return from a season-ending injury as he has been seen on the bench whenever the Englishman has been available for selection.
Even at the age of 31, the Spanish left-back looks to impress and Thomas Tuchel would be wise to keep his services as they look to pave their way for European top-flight football. With Jordi Alba at the same position in Barcelona, Alonso would mostly be coming off the bench to provide cover.
Since the club’s sale is imminent and an ownership change is certain, the situation has profoundly impacted the contract talks, with several key players looking to exit at the end of this season. We could expect an overhaul for Thomas Tuchel’s side in the upcoming transfer window.
