In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Pete O’Rourke tipped Aston Villa to move in for Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips. O’Rourke said,
“If Leeds were to go down, I’m sure Villa will be right in there amongst it trying to sign Kalvin Phillips as well as a number of other clubs. But it’s going to be a big summer ahead for Phillips, depending on what happens with Leeds.”
Phillips’ Injury Plagued Season In English Football
Phillips is having a difficult campaign at Elland Road as he was sidelined for a lot of games due to a hamstring injury. The 26-year-old has registered one goal and one assist in 22 matches for the Whites this season on all fronts.
The Leeds-born talent has done well to average 2.7 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even taken care of the ball when distributing possession from midfield after making 81.8% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
Is Phillips A Good Choice For Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard?
Phillips is a tough-tackling midfielder who can read the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his team at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed and is also proficient at playing his way out from inside his half. The 19-time England international is primarily a defensive midfielder but can even play as a central defender if required.
However, Phillips needs to add more goals and assists to his game if he wants to taste success at the highest level.
At 26, the Leeds sensation’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a decent choice for Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard to pursue this summer. We can expect Phillips to add more bite and steel to the Villans’ midfield.
Furthermore, the English midfield ace could go on to form an excellent partnership with John McGinn at Villa Park in the coming seasons. Thus, Gerrard should think about listening to O’Rourke’s advice by moving in for Phillips when the transfer window reopens later this year.
