In a recent report, Marca stated that Aston Villa have set their sights on Sevilla defender Diego Carlos. It has been mentioned that the Villans are eyeing a move to acquire the services of the Brazilian centre-back this summer.
Carlos’ Impressive Season In Spanish Football
The 29-year-old has enjoyed another solid campaign at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium after putting in a series of impressive displays at the centre of Sevilla’s backline. Carlos has made 45 appearances for the Andalusian outfit this season, scoring three goals in the process across multiple competitions.
The Brazilian sensation has proven himself to be a rock at the back by averaging 1.0 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been careful when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass completion rate of 87.6% in the Spanish first division (stats via whoscored).
What Will Carlos Add To Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard’s Team?
Carlos can use his strong 1.85m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air. He is often quick to spot the danger and doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when required.
The Brazilian talent is a solid tackler of the ball as well and can contribute by making some important interceptions inside his half. Furthermore, Carlos is proficient at playing his way out from the back which makes him a good fit for Steven Gerrard‘s brand of football at Villa Park.
At 29, the South American defensive ace has still got a few good years left in him to play at a high level. Thus, he will be a brilliant option for Aston Villa to pursue in this off-season.
Carlos will add a lot of quality to Gerrard’s defensive department and could serve as an upgrade over Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings at the West Midlands club. All in all, it makes sense for the Villans to move in for the Sevilla star ahead of the new campaign as he will help them compete for a European spot in the Premier League over the next few years.
