In a recent report, The Daily Record stated that Aston Villa are among several clubs hoping to land Rangers defender Calvin Bassey. It is understood that the Villans are leading the race to secure the Nigerian full-back’s services during this summer transfer period.
Bassey’s Impressive Form In Scottish Football
Bassey has enjoyed a solid season at the Ibrox Stadium after putting in some impressive displays on the left side of Rangers’ backline. The 22-year-old has made 49 appearances for the Scottish outfit during this campaign, netting six goals in the process across all fronts.
The two-time Nigeria international has given a good account of himself on the defensive third of the field as he is averaging 1.5 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 1.2 clearances per game in the Scottish Premiership.
He has even been excellent when distributing possession from the back based on his pass success rate of 86.3% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Bassey A Decent Fit For Aston Villa Boss Steven Gerrard?
Bassey can be a good defender at the back when he is playing well on the field. He can time his tackles well to secure the ball back for his side and doesn’t take too many chances when clearing his lines inside his half. Bassey is primarily a left-back but can also play as a centre-back.
The Nigerian sensation has got the vision to create a few inviting opportunities for his teammates in the final third. However, Bassey needs to add a few goals to his game if he wants to become a regular starter in Premier League football.
The talented full-back could be a great fit for Steven Gerrard‘s style of play at Villa Park as he has already played under the current Aston Villa manager during their time together in Glasgow.
We can expect Bassey to enhance the overall depth of the Villans‘ match-day squad and provide some serious competition for Lucas Digne (or maybe even one of the centre-half positions?) in the race to earn a regular starting spot at the West Midlands club in the coming seasons.
