Aston Villa have endured an up and down season in the Premier League which ended with a narrow 3-2 defeat last weekend. Steven Gerrard will now be in for a period of rebuilding in the coming months as he looks to recruit wisely and go strong in the upcoming campaign.
Aston Villa’s 2021-22 Season Review: Major Talking Points
The Villans has blown hot and cold throughout this campaign after their 3-2 opening day defeat away at Watford back in August. The West Midlands club got knocked out of the EFL Cup in the third round when they lost to Chelsea on penalties.
Aston Villa struggled to pick up points in league football during the winter months despite the appointment of Steven Gerrard as the club’s new boss. They also got dumped out of the FA Cup following a 1-0 loss at the hands of Manchester United back in January.
Gerrard’s men were in danger of getting dragged into a relegation dogfight after the turn of the year. However, they managed to pick up some form and ended the season earning a 14th place finish in the Premier League.
Aston Villa’s Best Players Of The 2021-22 Campaign
John McGinn
The Scottish sensation has continued to prove his worth as a solid presence at the centre of Aston Villa’s midfield. Despite finishing the campaign with just three goals and four assists to his name, McGinn deserves a lot of credit for making a positive impact at both ends of the field. The talented playmaker was once again a regular feature for the West Midlands club and seems to be getting better with each season.
Matty Cash
Cash was arguably the Villans‘ player of the year. He enjoyed a rich vein of form and was by far the most consistent performer for Steven Gerrard’s side based on his average of 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 2.2 clearances, 1.0 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football (stats via whoscored).
