In a recent interview with Give Me Sport, journalist Pete O’Rourke mentioned that West Ham United are keeping tabs on Union Berlin forward Taiwo Awoniyi. O’Rourke said,
“I’m sure West Ham scouts have been alerted to him. He’s a big, strong, pacey forward who could definitely come into that team and improve the West Ham options as well, and I think he’s got all the tools to be a success in the Premier League.
“So, I think West Ham, as well as several other Premier League clubs, will be keeping tabs on him this summer.”
Awoniyi’s Impressive Form In German Football This Season
Awoniyi is having an excellent campaign in German football as he has been responsible for scoring goals at a high rate while acting as the spearhead of Union Berlin’s attack. The 24-year-old has featured in 37 matches for the German outfit this season, banging in 17 goals and securing four assists in all competitions.
The Ilorin-born talent has performed well to average 2.1 shots, 0.8 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga. However, he has been sloppy with his ball distribution after making 66% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Awoniyi Add To West Ham United Boss David Moyes’ Side?
Awoniyi excels at creating a yard of space for himself to get a few shots in on-target. He has established himself as a decent finisher in the final third and can even chip in by picking up the odd assist from time to time.
The former Liverpool player can even use his pace to make some driving runs with the ball in behind the opposition backline.
West Ham are in dire need of a new centre-forward at the moment. Hence, Awoniyi fits the bill perfectly as he is good enough to rival Michail Antonio for a regular starting spot at the London Stadium next season.
We can expect Awoniyi to add a lot of goals to David Moyes‘ attacking department. Plus, he could help the Hammers challenge for a top-four place in the Premier League over the next few seasons. Thus, Moyes should consider orchestrating a move to bring the Nigerian frontman to the East London club ahead of the new campaign.
