In a recent report, Sport offered an update on the future of Chelsea defensive ace Andreas Christensen who is set to become a free agent at the end of this campaign. It has been revealed that the Blues centre-back could join Barcelona on a free transfer in the summer.
Christensen’s Decent Season At Stamford Bridge
Christensen is having a solid campaign in the English capital as he has put in a run of dominant displays for the West London outfit over the past ten months. The 25-year-old has registered two goals and one assist in 33 matches for Chelsea this season across all fronts.
The Danish talent has been a rock at the back based on his average of 0.8 tackles, 1.6 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been accurate when interchanging possession with his teammates after completing 89.2% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Christensen Set To Join Barcelona This Summer: Big Loss For Chelsea?
Christensen has established himself as a dominant presence on the defensive end of the field. Standing at 1.88m, he can use his strong frame to win some important aerial duels for his team and usually clears the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.
The Denmark international is a good tackler of the ball and can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his side. He is a tidy passer of the ball well which makes him a good fit for Barca’s brand of football at the Nou Camp.
There is no doubt that losing someone of Christensen’s quality on a free transfer will be a big loss for the Blues this summer. He has already proven his worth as a reliable first-team starter under Thomas Tuchel‘s stewardship during this campaign.
The Chelsea head coach has now got no option but to let the Danish defensive ace leave in the off-season. Still, the West London club would be wise to bring in a suitable replacement who is capable of filling Christensen’s shoes at Stamford Bridge over the next few years.
