In a recent edition of De Telegraaf football podcast (via Voetbal 4 U), journalist Mike Verweij stated that Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn is on the radar of Ajax. Verweij said,
“I think he (Bergwijn) is still very expensive for Ajax, even with his salary. That will be very difficult. I do think Ajax will make another attempt.”
Bergwijn’s Unimpressive Season At The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Bergwijn has struggled to break into Antonio Conte’s starting XI but deserves credit for producing a few productive displays on the left side of Tottenham’s attack. The Dutch sensation has scored four times and grabbed two assists in 26 matches for Spurs this season across all fronts.
The Amsterdam-born talent has seen most of his appearances come as a substitute which explains why he is only averaging 0.9 shots, 0.4 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has even been accurate with his ball distribution after making 83.6% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte Cash In On Bergwijn This Summer?
Bergwijn can use his pace to make life difficult for his marker out on the wide areas. He has a knack for scoring some important goals when he is playing with confidence on the field. The Dutch speedster has served as a decent option on Conte’s bench this season but the lack of game time is not doing his playing career any good.
Thus, it makes sense for Bergwijn to opt for a change of scenery this summer in search of greener pastures. He is simply not good enough to rival Heung-min Son for a place in Tottenham‘s starting XI. However, the Spurs outcast is versatile enough to play anywhere across the frontline.
At 24, Bergwijn has still got plenty of time to turn his career around for the better. Thus, it is only fair to the player if the North London giants allow him to leave at the end of this campaign. All in all, Conte should consider cashing in on Bergwijn and using the money generated from his sale to strengthen other areas of his match-day squad this summer.
