If a report from Frankfurter Rundschau is believed to be true, Rangers are set to rival HSV Hamburg for the signing of Crysencio Summerville in the upcoming summer window. There were rumours of interest in winter and the Light Blues might reignite the chase for the Leeds United youngster.
The Gers had a strong start under Giovanni van Bronckhorst who replaced Steven Gerrard as the new Ibrox chief midway through the season. But they eventually lost the top of the Premiership status following a dreadful run of results. Rangers need significant reinforcements ahead of the upcoming term, and Summerville, who impressed in limited minutes since his Elland Road swoop, should flourish his game north of the border.
The 20-year-old Netherlands youth international progressed through the youth ranks of Feyenoord before joining the Whites a couple of summers back. Van Bronckhorst monitored his development while in charge of the Dutch side, and the pair might reunite in Glasgow as claimed by the German outlet.
Why Rangers Are Favourites To Secure His Services
Before joining Leeds, Summerville had a couple of loan stints at FC Dordrecht and ADO Den Haag. Feyenoord offered him a new contract, but the winger turned it down in favour of the Yorkshire giants. Although he is yet to feature under the new Elland Road boss Jesse Marsch, a hat-trick for the reserves against Crystal Palace U23s earned the manager’s praise in Friday’s press conference.
“I thought he played fantastic. I think he has grown here more and more. I have talked to him about his behaviour and mentality, professional behaviour off the pitch, what he needs to be like when he shows up here and what the work week needs to be like.”
Said the American who rates him highly despite his lack of first-team involvement. Summerville needs gametime to justify his potential and a season-long loan might benefit the Dutch prodigy in the long run.
Rangers are not alone in the hunt with Hamburg also keen on securing his services. However, they have fallen behind in the promotion race and are destined to lose the transfer battle unless a miracle is scripted at Volksparkstadion.
Having said that, it won’t be easy for him to attune to the demands of the Scottish game. Amad Diallo, who joined on loan from Manchester United, is struggling for minutes down the right-hand flank and Summerville, too, needs to work hard to secure a starting status.
