In a recent report, the Chroniclelive revealed that Newcastle United are eyeing a summer move for Lens midfielder Seko Fofana. It is believed that the Magpies are planning to move in for the 26-year-old midfielder during the summer transfer window.
Fofana’s Decent Run Of Form In French Football
Seko Fofana is having a solid run at the Estadio Bollaert-Delelis and has established himself as a key player in the Lens’ midfield. The 26-year-old has scored nine goals in 35 matches for Lens this season, on all fronts.
The French midfielder has had a decent run with Lens this season by averaging 0.7 tackles, 2.5 shots, 1.1 key passes and 2.1 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even been accurate when distributing the ball from midfield after making 89.5% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Is Fofana The Right Fit For Newcastle United?
Fofana is a conservative tackler of the ball, as he does not dive into tackles aggressively and can strike the ball with power and precision from long range. He has got the vision to create some meaningful chances for his teammates in the final third.
The Ivory Coast international can hold the ball in the opposition half but is weak in retaining possession after losing it. He can read the game well on the offence and is a technically gifted midfielder but has to immensely improve his defence if he wishes to make a difference.
At 26, Fofana still has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good fit for Newcastle United this summer. The France-born talent will add more creativity and depth to the Magpies’ attack. He would serve as an upgrade over Jonjo Shelvey, already nearing 31 years of age.
Recruiting Fofana will be a decent move for the Newcastle Outfit as he could help the squad in the English top-flight over the coming seasons. Furthermore, he will only get better with each season. Thus, Newcastle United would be wise to engineer a move to lure Fofana to St. James Park when the transfer window commences in the summers.
