Recent reports from ESPN state that Manchester United’s deal with Flamengo involving a permanent move for Andreas Pereira is set to collapse as the Brasileiro Serie A side are convinced that the midfielder hasn’t done enough to extend his stay at the club. As a result, the Red Devils are set to miss out on a potential £12 million transfer fee (based on appearances).
‘Sources have said that Pereira moved to Flamengo in the hope of re-launching his career and was prepared to take a substantial pay-cut to seal a permanent move to the club.’ – The report read.
‘But a costly mistake in the Copa Libertadores final defeat against Palmeiras last November, when a bad pass in extra-time gifted Flamengo’s opponents a goal to claim a 2-1 win, has impacted on Pereira’s performances and a return to Old Trafford is now the most likely outcome for the player, who still has a year to run on his United contract.’
‘Sources have told ESPN that United are still hopeful that a deal can be done with Flamengo, who may yet be prepared to sign Pereira for a reduced fee.’
Last summer, the Brazilian international secured a transfer, which saw him move from Manchester United to Flamengo on a season-long loan deal. He enjoyed a fine start to the 2020/21 season, even helping his team reach the Copa Libertadores final; however, a streak of disappointing performances over the past few weeks has diluted the optimism regarding his extended stay at the Maracana. Flamengo’s financial restrictions aren’t helping the situation either.
The 26-year-old was deployed in more of a defensive role in the middle of the park by manager Renato Portaluppi. Despite his preferred position being that of an attacking midfielder, he adjusted well to meet his coach’s demands, but in recent weeks, he has been restricted to appearances off the bench.
What Should Be Rangnick’s Play?
For a player who has spent four of his last five seasons on loan, Andreas Pereira deserves regular gametime, be it in Brazil or somewhere else. Aged 26, regular minutes should be his first priority if he wishes to fulfil his potential in the upcoming years.
Given the presence of some world-class midfielders at Manchester United, it’s improbable that he’ll be securing regular minutes at Old Trafford, so a permanent move away seems to be the best for his future – be it for a reduced fee.
Away from Europe, the Brazilian international is free from the media pressure, and if he manages to find his form back, Tite might get him into his plans for the World Cup 2022.
