In a recent report, Estadio Deportivo has mentioned that Manchester United have launched a move to recruit Ronald Araujo from Barcelona this summer. It has been revealed that the Red Devils have made a ‘dizzying offer’ to acquire the services of the Uruguayan defensive ace whose current contract at the Nou Camp is set to run out in the summer of 2023.
Araujo’s Impressive Rise In Spanish Football This Season
Araujo has been a prominent presence at the centre of Xavi’s defence and deserves some credit for performing at a high level for his current employers this season. The former Barcelona B youngster has participated in 34 matches for the Catalan outfit during this campaign, netting four goals in the process across all competitions.
The 23-year-old has been a rock at the back for Barca as he is averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.6 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game in La Liga. He has even taken care of the ball when interchanging possession with his teammates after completing 89.5% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).
Is Araujo The Right Choice For Manchester United?
Araujo can get stuck in with some crunching tackles to make life tough for the opposition attackers. He usually times his challenges well to earn the ball back for his side on the defensive third of the pitch. Standing at 1.88m, the Uruguay international can use his strength to dominate the opposition in the air and can chip in by scoring the odd goal from time to time.
We can expect Araujo to enhance the quality of Man United‘s backline and could serve as an upgrade over Harry Maguire, whose form has been poor at Old Trafford, in the coming seasons.
At 23, the Barca defensive ace will only get better with each year, so Ralf Rangnick should think about getting a deal done for him at the end of this campaign. Araujo is good enough to form a dominant defensive partnership with Raphael Varane at the Theatre of Dreams. Therefore, he will be a decent choice for the Red Devils to consider in this off-season.
