In a recent report, The Times offered an update on Aston Villa and their pursuit of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips. It has been revealed that the Whites are preparing to offer the English midfield ace a new and improved contract amid recent interest from the Villans and West Ham United.
Phillips’ Impressive Form In English Football
Phillips is having a tough but solid campaign at Elland Road as he has produced a run of dominant displays at the centre of Leeds’ midfield. The 26-year-old has registered one goal and one assist in 15 matches for the Whites this season in all competitions.
The Leeds-born midfielder has been a consistent performer at the centre of the park based on his average of 2.3 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.0 clearances, 1.0 shots and 0.6 key passes per game in the Premier League.
He has even been excellent when distributing possession from midfield after making 82.9% of his attempted passes in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).
Leeds United Set To Offer Phillips A New Contract: Big Blow For Aston Villa?
Phillips can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition at the centre of the park. He can sense the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his team in midfield. The English midfield ace can strike the ball with power and accuracy from long range and is also a tidy passer as well. However, he is yet to taste success at the highest level.
Thus, Leeds’ desire to tie him down to a new contract will be a big blow for the Villans. Steven Gerrard could have definitely used a player of Phillips’ skillset to strengthen his squad in the summer. At 26, the Leeds star’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a good fit for Aston Villa ahead of the new campaign.
The 19-time England international would have been the perfect partner for John McGinn at Villa Park. If Phillips does end up extending his contract with Leeds, Gerrard would have no choice but to turn his attention to another one of his targets in the off-season.
