In a recent interview with Football Insider, Frank McAvennie urged Newcastle United to seal a £15m move for Matt Targett following his successful loan spell from Aston Villa recently. McAvennie said,
“I mean, wow, £15million, that’s nothing.
“I was thinking Villa would be wanting far more than that. My logic was they could spend that money on someone a bit better.
“But £15million for someone with his experience is a brilliant deal.
“I was worried about the new owners not really knowing what they were doing in the transfer market but they have done well there.
“So, get that one done then focus on getting the other players they need if they really want to push on next season.
“Targett would be a great start because by all accounts he’s a good lad and he looks to have settled in.”
Targett’s Decent Loan Spell At Newcastle So Far
Targett is enjoying a fruitful loan spell with the Magpies after making a deadline move from Villa Park in January. The Eastleigh-born talent has registered one goal and one assist in 25 matches for the Tyneside outfit this season in all competitions.
The 26-year-old has given a good account of himself in both halves based on his average of 1.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 3.0 clearances, 0.7 shots, 2.0 key passes, 2.0 crosses and 1.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. However, he needs to take care of the ball a bit better when distributing possession from the back after making 73.5% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
Newcastle Urged To Seal A £15m Move For Targett: Good Move For Everyone Involved?
Targett has got decent pace under his belt and can make some energetic runs with the ball down the left flank. He is a solid tackler and can contribute by making some important interceptions at the back.
The English full-back is a decent crosser of the ball and seems to have settled into Eddie Howe‘s playing style quite well at St. James’ Park.
Thus, it makes sense for the Magpies to orchestrate a move to land Targett permanently for £15m at the end of this season. The English sensation can also benefit from joining Howe’s team as he would have a better shot at securing regular game time for them in the coming seasons.
With all things considered, Targett’s £15m permanent transfer to Newcastle this summer will be a good move for both the player and the Tyneside club as they look to collectively taste some success together in the not-too-distant future.
