Recent reports from Italian media outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport state that Manchester United are keen on signing Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez in the upcoming transfer window as Ralf Rangnick looks set to add to his defensive options.
The Red Devils have already scouted the 21-year-old defender and are expected to rival Leeds United and Inter Milan for a potential summer move.
Having come through the ranks at FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, Sergio Gomez signed for Belgian side Anderlecht from Borussia Dortmund for a fee in the region of 1.5 million euros in the summer of 2021. In his debut season, the Spaniard has netted six goals and bagged 14 assists in 41 games across all competitions.
Furthermore, he has managed to put some awe-inspiring numbers on the board this term – averaging 1.5 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, one clearance, 1.3 shots, 1.8 key passes, 1.5 crosses and 2.3 long balls per 90 minutes in the Belgian top-flight.
Good Fit For The Red Devils?
Gomez’s ability to understand certain in-game situations is quite impressive, especially while going forward. Besides holding on to the ball using his sheer strength and power, Gomez doesn’t refrain from bursting forward to dribble past the opposition players and put threatening crosses into the box. His powerful runs make him a highly advantageous asset as he adds a new dimension to his team’s attack. Last but not least, Gomez’s versatility makes him more appealing. He can fill in the conventional left-back position as well as the contemporary left-midfield/left-wing position.
While Manchester United have Luke Shaw and Alex Telles, none of them has been consistent with their performances this season. At 21, Sergio Gomez has some of his best years ahead of him, so it won’t be a surprise if United go to great lengths to secure his signature.
