Chelsea welcomed Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge earlier this afternoon as they focused on collecting maximum points at home. The Blues made a dominant start to the game but struggled to be clinical in the first half.
Thomas Tuchel’s men pushed on in search of the winning goal in the second 45 minutes and finally found it in the 89th minute courtesy of Kai Havertz’s excellent control and finish. The contest ended with the West London giants securing a narrow 1-0 win in front of their home supporters.
Let’s take a look at how each Chelsea player fared during the match against the Magpies.
GK: Edouard Mendy – 7/10
The Senegalese keeper made a couple of solid stops during the game and secured an easy clean sheet at Stamford Bridge.
RB: Trevoh Chalobah – 7/10
He performed his defensive duties well and made one good run in the opponent’s half.
CB: Andreas Christensen – 7/10
Christensen was quite accurate with his passing and did enough work defensively to restrict the opposition attackers from scoring today.
CB: Antonio Rudiger – 6.5/10
The German centre-back didn’t take too many chances when clearing the danger at the back. He will be happy with the clean sheet.
LB: Malang Sarr – 6.5/10
The French left-back kept a solid shape inside his half but failed to influence the game in the final third.
CM: N’Golo Kante – 7/10
The French midfielder was full of energy and running in midfield and even offered decent protection for his teammates at the back.
CM: Jorginho – 7.5/10
The Italy international anchored the midfield with conviction and deserves a lot of credit for setting up Havertz’s winning goal in the 89th minute.
CM: Mason Mount – 6/10
Mount struggled to get into the flow of the game and got substituted after the hour mark.
RW: Hakim Ziyech – 7/10
Ziyech made some decent chances for others around him but failed to find the back of the net.
ST: Kai Havertz – 7.5/10
The German attacker was a constant menace in the final third and won the game for Chelsea with an excellent finish with just one minute left to run in normal time.
LW: Timo Werner – 6/10
He offered very little in front of the opponent’s goal and could only last 62 minutes.
Substitutes:
ST: Romelu Lukaku – 6.5/10
He caused a few problems for the Newcastle defenders but didn’t do enough to register a goal.
CM: Mateo Kovacic – 6/10
Kovacic added some energy to Chelsea’s midfield.
RW: Christian Pulisic – 6/10
Pulisic’s impact on the game was minimal after he came off the bench.
