According to The Sun, Chelsea are set to face stiff competition in their quest to keep hold of Conor Gallagher. The English midfielder, currently on loan at Crystal Palace, has become a top target for two Serie A giants in the form of Inter Milan and Juventus. Both the clubs were scouting him in Palace’s recent draw with Man City and are weighing up a potential move in the summer.
Conor Gallagher’s Rapid Rise To Prominence
Conor Gallagher initially made his breakthrough last season during his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion. Although he wasn’t able to help his team from being relegated, the midfielder raised many eyebrows with his spirited performances in the middle of the park.
Gallagher’s display earned him a loan move to Crystal Palace, giving him the opportunity to work under Patrick Vieira. The youngster hasn’t disappointed either, having emerged as one of the rising stars in the Premier League this term.
Operating in central midfield, Gallagher has offered vigour, aggression and work ethic, helping Palace emerge as a solid unit, especially in the second line of press. His effectiveness in the press has been complemented by his equally impressive productivity.
Indeed, Gallagher has netted eight goals in the Premier League this term, making him Palace’s second-highest goalscorer – only behind Wilfried Zaha. Although the midfielder’s form has dissipated lately, Gallagher remains one of the most exciting young midfielders in the Premier League right now.
Why Chelsea Must Keep Hold Of Him
Inter Milan and Juventus are ready to snap up Conor Gallagher in the summer, hoping to take advantage of Chelsea’s financial crisis following the sanction of Roman Abramovich.
It could be quite devastating for the Blues to lose out on Gallagher, especially given the fact that the club are already anticipating a mass exodus in the summer. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are all potential candidates to leave the club, virtually leaving the Chelsea defence in tatters.
The same could happen in midfield, where Jorginho is facing an uncertain future at the club. His potential departure from Stamford Bridge should create a massive void in the midfield unit. And that is why the retention of Gallagher could prove to be pivotal.
Although the Englishman is not a direct replacement for Jorginho, his aggression and work-ethic are ideally suited to the Premier League and he can thus become an ideal midfield partner for the likes of N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic.
At the age of just 22, Gallagher has a bright future ahead of him, so Chelsea must do everything they can to keep hold of the Epsom native as they look to combat the financial crisis in the summer.
