Fichajes has recently reported that Barcelona are set to rival Real Madrid for LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David. It is believed that the Catalan giants are planning to strengthen their attack by recruiting the Canadian striker in the summer.
David’s Excellent Record In Ligue 1 This Season
David is having a decent campaign in French football as he has been responsible for performing at a high level as the spearhead of Lille’s attack. The 22-year-old has banged in 16 goals in 35 matches for the French outfit this season across all competitions. However, he has failed to pick up any assists so far.
The New York-born talent has proven himself to be a valuable contributor in the final third as he is averaging 1.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.8 dribbles per game in Ligue 1. He has even distributed the ball relatively well after completing 78.4% of his attempted passes in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
Is David The Right Choice For Barcelona?
David deserves a lot of credit for transforming himself into a prolific finisher in front of the opposition goal. He can make some intelligent runs in behind the opponent’s backline and can even set up a few meaningful openings for his teammates to find the back of the net.
The Canadian striker is a player on the rise and would add a lot of goals to Xavi’s attacking department at the Nou Camp. He is primarily a centre-forward but can also fill in as an attacking midfielder if required. At 22, David will only get better with each season which makes him a decent choice for the Catalan giants to consider during the summer transfer period.
The Lille marksman could serve as a decent long-term successor to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who is entering the twilight years of his playing career, at Barcelona. More importantly, he could help Barca challenge for the league title and even compete for the UEFA Champions League trophy over the next few years. Thus, Xavi should think about moving in for the Canadian talent when the transfer window commences at the end of this campaign.
